Glossary of Terms

AC – Armor Class: a number representing how hard it is to hit your character in combat, the higher the better. Armor, Dodge Modifiers, and Magic can all increase your AC as well as certain Feats.



Brandobian: The adjective (and language) used in regards to the people on the western coast of the continent. They claim that their ancestor’s came from across the vast ocean in the largest ships ever made by mortals. Whether this is true or not, they certainly have a strong naval tradition. They are modeled after the Spanish in various points of their history.

Cat-folk: See Hin below.


Common: This language does not exist in the setting, see “Merchant’s Tongue” which replaces it below.


Constitution: Physical hardiness. Determines hit points and gives a bonus to concentration checks. A character that is at a negative number of hit points equal to their Constitution (Con) score is dead.

Death: Occurs at negative hit points equal to Constitution score, after suffocation / drowning, and / or when ANY ability score reaches zero.

Dejy: The proper name and adjective used to describe the Dejy Human cultural group. In an age so ancient it has been almost entirely forgotten, the Dejy were said to rule the entire continental landmass before the coming of the other human groups. Now, however, they are largely displaced peoples huddling around a few badlands and / or strongholds. They are modeled after the Near-East. Also the proper name of the language of this human cultural group.

Demihuman: Refers to the civilized non-monstrous sentient races, which are commonly found in Player’s Handbooks for various campaign settings. They are very similar to humans, hence the title. This is, of course, a meta-term and never used by characters in the actual Campaign Setting except for racially insensitive humans. After all, why would Elves use the term “humanoid” except to denote a sentience that is less worthy than an elf? Similarly creature names with the common “-folk” descriptor are only used by outside races. Catfolk refer to themselves as the “hin” for example and see the same amount of insult in being called Catfolk as Humans would being called “Hairless Monkeys.” This descriptor is used in relation to the following races: Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, Halflings, Humans, and all half / mixed breeds thereof (including Half-Orcs, Tieflings, Aasimar, Shifters, etc).


Dodge Modifier:






Fhokki: The proper name, and adjective used to describe, the Fhokki Human cultural group. They are a people fleeing the monstrous frozen north, for warmer and more fertile climates. They are modeled largely on the ancient Russian tribes.

Hex Blade:


HP – the amount of damage that can occur before an unconscious state occurs. See combat & especially death for more details.

Imperial Royalist Alliance: Also known as the Empire of Kalamar, the Imperial Alliance or the Royalist Alliance. It is not technically an Alliance since the Imperial Province of Kalamar, headed by Emperor Kabori of Kalamar, technically rules the other semi-autonomous states in the Empire. While allied with other nations, the Empire, and thus the Imperial Alliance, consists of Basir, Dodera, Kalamar, Karasata, O’Par, Tarisato, & Tokis. The Dwarven Kingdom of Karasta (IronTop) is technically a Client Kingdom or “Protectorate” of Kalamar, and is a dues paying vassal of the Empire.


Kalamaran: The adjective used to describe the people, language, and culture of the Kalamaran Humans, which inhabit the middle of the continental landmass betwixt the two most imposing mountain ranges. The Kalamaran empire has recently fragmented into several smaller countries, some of which have entirely different governmental systems. The Kalamaran peoples originally lived on Svimohzia, but were forced across a land bridge in prehistory by the Svimohzians. The Kalamarans then displaced the Renaarian peoples whom fled to the area now known as Renaaria bay. Modeled after the Roman Republic and Empire.

Kender: The term that halfings use when discussing their own race (as they do not see themselves as “half” of anything!). It is the proper name, as well as the adjective used to describe them in proper terms. Some Kender take offense to being called “halflings” but many that deal with outsiders learn to accept the term “halfling.”

Kara-Tur: the name given to the landmass on which Rokugan sits, where the events of Oriental Adventures takes place, across the vast Brandobian sea. Also referred to as “Mystara” in the legends of the Brandobians.


Legate: The supreme officer of a Legion in the Kalamaran military system.

Lizard-folk: See Lyzan below.



Merchant’s Tongue: A language created to facilitate trade amongst the various races consisting almost entirely of nouns with only a few verbs and adjectives. The grammar is quite simple as there is only a present tense. It’s writing is largely ideographic. This language replaces Common in the setting, and is used widely by the well-traveled. While all adventurers receive this language for free, it should be noted that many NPCs and Monsters do NOT speak it (though some have learned to recognize certain symbols). It was created by the Kender (halflings).

pp – Platinum Piece, like the astral diamonds they replace in this setting, they are VERY rare. Only the wealthiest nations and individuals (such as gem exchangers) do any business in platinum pieces. Worth 10 gold pieces. Has the same purchasing power as an astral diamond in other campaign settings. See Coinage for further details.

Praetor- the title of the leader of the Republic of Pekal, chosen by the Senate of Pekal.

Renaarrian / Renaarese: the language / adjective used when discussing the Human cultural group of Renaaria bay. They originally lived in the Aubelok Swamp Basin area, but were forced out by the invading Kalamarans. They are largely modeled after the Ancient Greek city states as well as the late Medieval Italian City states.

Silver Sand: A naturally occuring substance in the Khydoban desert that is used as a drug to induce visions of the future, create euphoria, and heighten magical poweress. It is sacred to the temples of the god of SLEEP as well as the god of FATE. It is harvested in Thygasha near Renaaria Bay. It is similar to the “Spice” from Frank Herbert’s “Dune.”

Svimohzian: The adjective (and name of the language) used in regards to the human cultural group native to the island continent of Svimohzia, modeled on the advanced societies of western and sub-saharan Africa before societal collapse caused by the slave trade. In the Campaign Setting they are considered the cradle of all true civilization and to be the most cultured of all humans despite the recent collapse of their once proud Empire.

Telene: The name of the planet on which the Kingdoms of Kalamar Campaign Setting is placed. The Occidental Adventures, in a Fall of Rome stylization is the Main Kingdoms of Kalamar Setting. However, on a continent across the sea lies Kara-Tur and Rokugan, where Oriental Adventures in the land of the Jade Throne take place. Tellene is a planet similar in size to Earth, but with three moons, and a warmer climate. The lands of Tellene defined in the Kingdoms of Kalamar campaign setting sourcebook are often referred to as the Sovereign Lands, and include the kingdoms of Brandobia, the Kalamaran Empire, the cities and city-states of Reanaaria Bay, the Isle of Svimohzia, the Wild Lands and the Young Kingdoms.

Young Countries’ Alliance: Also known as the Rebel Alliance, it is an alliance of former provinces and holdings of the Empire of Kalamar. These province and holdings have broken off to become new countries with heavy leanings towards democracy and republicanism. Of course the Imperial Royalist Alliance, lead by Kalamar, is trying to retake these nations.
